4 Easy Steps To Create A Massive Breakthrough In the New Year

I finally did it!! I created a huge breakthrough around commitment this year and I’m spilling the tea on how I did it, so that you can create your own massive breakthrough in the new year. For years, I would sit in my coaches office in the New Year as we would develop a plan for what I wanted to create for the year and every year I had some version of “be consistent with my blog” or “post on social” both of which would die hard shortly after I had declared them. This year I finally had a breakthrough around my commitment to writing and I want to share a few simple tools that help me in my follow through, so you can also create a breakthrough around your commitment in 2023.

Before I share what I did to keep my commitment this year, I want to share one of the major things that prevented me from following through year over year is the fact that I kept “should-ing” on myself. I would say things like, “I need to write or post X amount of times to create a real impact” or “all the marketing experts say I need this cadence” but the truth is that my focus was on other places and the writing and social posting felt so forced for me. There was no heart in it for me. It was a major “should” desire, so as you’re building out what you want to create this year, if you notice yourself with a list of desires you think you should have, do yourself a favor and remove them immediately!

After I stopped “should-ing” on myself, here is what I actually did to create a breakthrough and I promise if you follow these steps, a breakthrough is available to you as well:

  1. Choose ONE thing to focus on: this year I let go of the achiever part of me that tends to split my focus on a million things and I just put my focus on one thing, publishing two blog posts a month. We live in a doing society, so only focusing on one thing often doesn’t seem like enough, but I promise you if you have the courage to remove the pressure of doing a million things and make just ONE commitment, you will experience infinite results. There is a great book called the ONE thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan that goes into detail about this approach.

  2. Make a shorter commitment: I told myself I’m only going to commit to writing for 6 months instead of a year. Once I had kept my commitment for the first six months, it was so much easier to keep going. I had the feeling of, how can I not finish the year writing. It had become a habit at that point.

  3. Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Is: this is one of my favorite quotes by Steven Pressfield. Know that some days you might not feel like doing what you’ve committed to. Don’t follow the emotion, follow the action. I knew I had committed to writing so on the days I didn’t want to write, I placed myself in my seat and opened an empty page to write, anyway.

  4. Done is Better Than Perfect: Prior to this year I had created so many different rules around my writing. It had to be a certain word count, it had to be posted on a certain day, etc. This year I threw all the rules out and I just wrote from my heart, without any rules.

Follow these four simple steps and you’re guaranteed to create a breakthrough in the new year and as always, I’m here to support and cheer you on along the way.
