Why Having A Big Vision Is Getting In the Way of Getting What You Want

If you’ve ever tried to accomplish a goal, the first step that’s typically taken is creating your vision or starting with identifying the outcome you’d like to achieve. If you’re really into stretching yourself, then after creating your goal you might ask yourself “Well what would be even better than that?” And then you make that your goal. Or, perhaps you’ve been influenced by an inspiring instagram post about creating a big dream. Now you have your big dream, you’re excited, fired up, so now what?

What happens next is where people tend to get caught up. They get distracted, they might feel super motivated for a week or two and then the motivation and engagement starts to wane, perhaps they’ve set a goal right below their upper limit so it doesn’t inspire them to take action, or perhaps they’ve created a goal SO big and SO inspiring that it overwhelms the hell out of them. If you fall into any of these categories, here are a few tricks to knocking any goal you have out of the park:

The Issue: I’m too distracted to start: You’re excited about the vision you’ve created, but now going to the grocery store and doing laundry has suddenly become the MOST important thing you need to do AND it needs to get done right NOW!

The Fix: Create time blocks in your calendar during the time of day when you know you’re the most focused. For example, if you’re trying to write a book and you find you can focus best in the morning then set aside 1-2 hours a day to write every morning. No excuses. The laundry can wait.

You can also try journaling as sometimes subconscious fears of actually getting what you want can prevent you from diving in!

The Issue: I’ve lost my motivation: You’re fired up for a week, or a month and then lose hope or lose momentum and have trouble getting back on track or you scrap your big dreams all together.

The Fix: Remember, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Take small steps and build in a reward system. By celebrating what may seem like the smallest win creates motivation to keep going even when you don’t want to.

The Issue: I’m uninspired by my own goals: Perhaps this is the first time really exploring what you want or asking for what you want. Trying something new feels uncomfortable or perhaps you’ve never asked for what you want. When we’ve never asked for what we want, we could fall into a pattern of creating goals that don’t inspire us.

The Fix: You have a huge opportunity to explore! Begin questioning your fears or beliefs around success. What is your definition of success? What do you believe around how/what it means to get there? Are there any unconscious patterns or beliefs that you’re not allowed to ask for or get what you want? Start with inquiry and begin questioning any belief that could be blocking you from achieving EVERYTHING you want. It is your birthright to have what you want.

The Issue: I’m so overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start: Your goal seems so big and amazing and now you just feel lost or overwhelmed in terms of where to start.

The Fix: Start backwards and begin with the date that you want to accomplish your goal by. From there fill in milestones leading up to the date. Create tiny steps. For example, I once had a client come to me wanting to find a new job and she had just moved to a new city. The advice she was given before seeing me was go reach out to 50 people. Reaching out to 50 people seemed so daunting to her so we broke it down. She could reach out to 2 people a day Monday - Friday and could have reached out to 50 people in 5 weeks. Reaching out to 2 people a day felt much more manageable for her and allowed her the space to get started. The trick is to build in the TINIEST step you can imagine, so you build confidence when you accomplish that TINY step. Ultimately, you build confidence, momentum, inspiration and you reach your goals even quicker than you imagined.

I’d love to hear in the comments where you tend to feel blocked as it relates to accomplishing your dreams and what is the TINY step you’re going to take this week to busting through the blocks.

Big Love,

Karlie
